There are two basic approaches: hypothesis-driven and data-driven. Taking the first approach, we ask specific questions of the data to confirm or reject a hypothesis about the data's identity, relationships, function or other relevant properties. In the second approach, powerful analyses are applied to extract any information that the data can give.
