Janssen Genomics
software standards

working towards a
 bioinformatics software standard

Given the increasingly important role of bioinformatics in life science and pharmaceutical research, as well as the considerable investment that is made into research based on results generated by bioinformatics, quality control standards are becoming absolutely essential. As new bioinformatics algorithms and applications are developed and evolve, a rigorous standard must be applied. We argue that the best model available is the open source software model coupled to rigorously peer-reviewed publication. To ensure the highest standard, Janssen Genomics strictly adheres to the use of peer-reviewed published algorithms. We support open source software and are in favor of open source programming in bioinformatics (see Open Bioinformatics Foundation). We firmly believe that the role of a bioinformatics service provider lies in the transparent integration of biological expertise with industrial-strength computational resources to provide integrated solutions to broader R&D requirements.

Quality standards must also cover the end use of bioinformatics software. Although bioinformatics methods naturally evolve and are constantly improved, currently there is greater need for proper use of existing algorithms and applications rather than the development of new algorithms. In other words, the biologically correct exploitation of current algorithms and methods will yield a wealth of biological knowledge that can be directly applied to improvement of human health or other life science research goals. Janssen Genomics is setting a new standard for the exploitation of bioinformatics by rigorous application of biochemical and molecular biological knowledge.
